Hi Uncle Urmas, can I delve deeply Into your mind. I have decided to install Linux 18 Cinnamon onto my PC as this is a long term Distro until 2021. At the moment I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 64bit on a 1500 hard drive but intend to keep that as if it all goes pair shaped I can re install it with no trouble at all.
Now I intend to install Mint Cinnamon 18 64bit on a spare disc a Seagate desktop SSHD 2000GB what advice can you give me or what should I look out for? Any help or advice...

I am writing this in the Linux Forum as was not sure where to put it perhaps it should be in the general. Well anyway I have been a Microsoft user from 1999 using XP,Vista, W7, W8, and then W10. I had a dabble with Linux but never really used it because it was two much bother using dual boot also I worked in a local authority IT centre where if I wanted any help or downloads I could have them FOC ( I had nothing to do with computing I was the caretaker) anyway I was used to Microsoft's...

I'm bored.

So lets have a looksee at how speedy folks hard disks are. Want to play along ? It will only take a few seconds and you may be surprised at the results.

Open up a TERMINAL and run as root or via sudo the following command,

Code:
hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
Here are the results from my old Dell with a ssd (sda) and with a sd card running from a usb 2 port (sdb).

Code:
Drives: HDD TotalSize:136.2GB(37.0% used)
                   ID-1:/dev/sda model: MKNSSDCR120GB size:120.0GB...

What to do with a Raspberry Pi Zero?

I bought a Raspberry Pi 3 to use as a 3D Print server (using Octoprint, but more on that later!). I noticed that the same shop had a Raspberry Pi Zero in stock for just £4... crazy to think that you can buy a mini Linux PC for that price!

I'm going to have a tinker with it next week to see how powerful it is, but I'd be interested to know if you guys can think of anything interesting that could be made with a mini £4 linux powered device? I'm considering using it for wireless audio...

Well you can laugh but lots of tears this end:cry:. As you know my last SSHD disc died on me and I installed a new 2TB one. I reinstalled Mint downloaded all my files and at the end of that found all my music and pictures found that the music wouldn't play as I downloaded from my Backup external drive, yes you have guest it they were a MS backup, Pictures OK but over 5,000 tracks sweet FA. Without thinking in bad temper and frustration I re installed Mint and now have to re download all my...

Help needed using Raspberry Pi Zero for audio server

Below I have posted a few pics of the various parts I've put aside for a project I started several months ago but shelved due to confusion on my part.

I have all these parts in a carry case stored under my bed atm, I think I have everything I need with the possible exception of a screen or small monitor if I can't access this setup via a computer using Windows 10. I can access the eventual Raspberry Pi Zero setup using either hard wired Ethernet or from my wireless router.

My intention was...

Docker on a Pi

For while now I have had an itch to host a Ghost blog running from a Pi located at home.
So have finally made a start.

I am attempting to run Docker on a Pi2 with a ghost instance running in a docker container. The Ghost will be accessible from any pc connected to the internet. If I am successful I think the Pi and my broadband will cope with the/any extra traffic my blog may attract.

I'll assume that you are all familiar with the Raspberry Pi. If not have a read at the link,...

Disable HDMI/Display from terminal?

This may not be the right section, as I'm using an AndroidX86 build, but it's essentially a Linux OS so I hope one of you Linux gurus will know the answer :).

I'm putting together a touchscreen Android computer for the kitchen, which will run widgets and apps that we often use (i.e. there's a shopping one, music, recipes, calendar, etc...). However this doesn't need to be on all the time, just in the morning and evenings. I tried using Android apps to put the device to sleep and wake it up...

Well I downloaded KDE on a spare drive and had a good go on it all day in fact, what did I think of it. Firstly it downloaded faultlessly and was easy to install. I found the boot up was quick and the picture quality was excellent far better than Cinnamon in fact more like a 3D screen and if it worked in Cinnamon it would have been the best experience that I could have had. But I found it confusing and difficult to navigate, so after trying to use it for a day I gave up and reverted back to...

Recently inherited a Dell 4700 which is a 2005 era pc. I added more ram and popped in a more modern gfx card and gave it a dust out with the ol' fire extinguisher.
What to do next ? Install a os of course.
So I chose MX-15 as it runs on,

Well I had quite an exciting Easter weekend linux wise.If you caught up with my E2B thread you will know that I was looking for a distro to install on a usb for a friends laptop. Now this needed to have persistence as my friend is going to use the os as a replacement for XP but is not ready to jump ship straight away.

I did some tests of the...
