The Four minute Challenge !!!

We all know that Rodger Bannister broke the four minute barrier for running a mile in 1954. Did you know that it was only in 1994 that a forty year old irishman, Eamonn Coghlan was the first to do the same.

Well this challenge has nothing to do with being over forty or running a four minute mile.

I have been filling in time and keeping the old grey cell in working order by playing against the clock with gnome-mahjongg. I have been attempting to complete the puzzle in under four minutes...

Had a trip to National Botanic Garden of Wales which has a butterfly house where I took some pictures. On arriving home i found I had what looked like a series of nine pictures that may I thought make a decent .gif.

How would I do this in penguin land ?
With the "convert" tool I hear you cry. How did I use this tool ?

Placed all nine pictures in a new folder.

Opened a terminal in the folder or you could cd to the folder.

Used these two commands...

Vokoscreen screen recorder.

Gave vokoscreen a test run out today which is a simple to use screen recorder. It seems pretty light to use and is smooth and fast in use at least it is on my modest system and Arch os.

http://www.kohaupt-online.de/hp/

Have not set up sound yet and this is my first ever go at screencasting so I doubt I'll be getting any Oscar nominations.
The video shows me changing themes in Window Maker and installing an old theme I made a few years ago. Seems I was using the theme as a...

I decided to give it a try and installed it on a new partition alongside Lubuntu on my old laptop IBM T-43, so it is now a dual boot configuration with Mate flavour. I have been monitoring it since last 3 days and it is producing more results in less time compared to Lubuntu, Is it really possible? I did not think so but it sure is. How can an operating system be a medium for faster crunching? I wonder

It is working great and the improvements are very appealing. Everything worked out of...

I am attempting to install Linux Mint 18.2 xfce on an Medion MD96630 laptop (CPU Intel 2-core 1.6 GHz and 4 GB of DDR2 RAM). I can't rely on booting into a USB live session to complete an interrupted installation and after automatic boot get a screen similar to that I have appended below.

From reading on the Internet I have been led to think I have a failing HDD or RAM. Has any Linux user here got any idea what I may conclude from the screen output which repeats on and on and eventually...

This thread is dedicated to Window Maker one of the oldest window managers for linux still actively maintained. It is still as functional and useful as when it made its debut in 1997.

I will include TIPS and articles as I find them. The forum does not allow for editing posts after a short time so scanning the whole thread will be necessary to find any relevant and useful TIPS.

Amanda the Panda is the official mascot for Window Maker. She is a real cutie....

The thing that puts people off Linux

As you know I am a fairly new user user of Linux and often go on the Linux Forums seeking help or helping others new to Linux Mint Cinnamon. I have found that many of the forums seem to be frequented by people that are full of their own importance and seem to look down on someone else who do not have the same ability or knowledge. I am glad to say that PC Review is not like that its members are so helpful and friendly and guide you in the right direction. So to all the Members of PCR thank...

I'm bored.

Open up a TERMINAL and run as root or via sudo the following command,

This morning my wife called me and asked to access her PC which is Windows 10 and send her a document, being a loving husband I said I would. Well I haven't used W10 since December 2015 what a nightmare!!!!. When I eventually found the document she wanted I had to copy and send it another nightmare, the whole thing took about 1/2 hour. Windows 10 seems to have changed from the Windows 10 I knew in 2015 when I transfered to Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.1 which at the time was easy but coming back...

I can vouch for Linux Lite for older machines, recently installed it on a Socket A / 2.1Ghz / 1Gb RAM machine and it fairly flies along.

I tried several other distros on the same machine including Mint and they all dragged their heels.

I am sick to the back teeth with Microsoft who are now an insidious company trying to collect as much data from you as possible & forcing downloads on you, you don’t want.

I like many was tricked into installing Windows 10 as it was free, & giving up my Windows 7 which was a great operating system. But like other good operating systems, Microsoft will stop supporting Win 7.

Windows 10 was ok at first (providing you altered all of the ‘Privacy’ Settings’), but after the expiry of the window...
